Tag: subrogation

Auto insurance subrogation is when your insurance company pays for your damages after an accident and then seeks reimbursement from the at-fault driver’s insurance company. This process allows the insurer to recover the money it paid out, which can benefit the policyholder by potentially getting their deductible back. In some jurisdictions, such as Alberta, subrogation may be impacted by Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD) laws, which are designed to simplify the process by having you deal with your own insurer for non-fault accidents.  Your own insurance company pays you directly, and then your insurance company goes after the insurance company for the at-fault driver for reimbursement.  Your personal injury lawyer will make a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance company for anything not covered buy subrogation under the Alberta Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD) laws.
